Grant RED2022-134540-T funded by:
Objective 1: To increase the cohesion of the Spanish Working Group on Multicriteria Decision Making (SGW-MCDM).
Decision making with multiple criteria , in most cases conflicting, is something that appears in practically any field of management. The application of the methods and methodologies of Multicriteria Decision Making is therefore transversal to multiple areas of knowledge, and therefore runs the risk of being dispersed. It is necessary to develop activities jointly, to create meeting points so that this knowledge is not dispersed and multidisciplinary teams are created.
Objective 2: To increase the visibility of the SGW-MCDM internationally.
Although individually each group may have a relevant international activity, and although in Spain the SGW-MCDM is a reference for those who research or want to enter this field, the Group as such does not have that international impact. Therefore, it is intended that the Group can be identified internationally, for which it has to improve its visibility and organize activities of international impact in which the Network is clearly identified as the organizer or co-organizer.
Objective 3: To increase national and international collaborations of the groups that make up the network, and in particular, for the development of research and fundraising.
Currently, although globally there are many synergies between SGW-MCDM nodes and collaborations of these with international groups, these collaborations are not reflected in joint projects, and most of the time they are very focused on publications and in some groups. Nowadays, there is a clear tendency to build interdisciplinary groups to carry out projects. The Thematic Network shares this philosophy, contrary to the atomization of the groups (the proposal itself is so stated). The aim is to increase collaboration between nodes, resulting in publications as well as in the development of joint or coordinated projects, and to expand international collaborations of new groups of the Network.
Objective 4: Disseminate and disseminate the methodology and its applications, as well as train younger generations, favoring the creation of national and international peer-to-peer networks.
Multicriteria decision making is a powerful tool to address real decision problems, and therefore its development should be encouraged, as well as its potential in applications. Thus, the aim is, on the one hand, to increase the dissemination of methodologies and the popularization of applications, and on the other, to train those who are starting out in research so that they can incorporate the methodologies naturally into their work, or make their study and development the focus of their research.
- Activity 1: Annual meetings and special sessions at national congresses
Although it has been called Activity, it is actually a set of activities of the Network that are proposed as a continuity to the existing ones, but with a larger dimension. It is proposed to hold an annual meeting of the SGW-MCDM (the first in spring 2023 in Madrid, and the second in spring 2024 in Oviedo), and the organization of special sessions at national congresses, such as that of the SEIO in November 2023 in Elche, including the invitation of speakers from international entities, and scheduling working sessions to analyze joint project proposals.
- Activity 2: Updating of the web site by developing the English version
This activity involves the development of the English version of the SGW-MCDM website, which will contribute to Objective 2 of international visibility, and will allow international dissemination of the events organized and the materials developed within the Network.
- Activity 3: Co-organization of the FLINS2024 Congress
Under the umbrella of the FLINS brand, a series of biennial international conferences are held. Originally based on Fuzzy Logic, its scope has been increasing over time. In 2024 the FORAid Group will organize the international FLINS2024 congress at the Complutense University of Madrid (it already did so in 2008 with great success), and under the auspices of the Network, it is intended that the scope of this edition will have a strong component in MCDM embodied in the title of the congress, special sessions, and at least one plenary lecture. This will also position MCDM as a central theme in a series of conference that are repeated biannually, and will give visibility to the Network.
- Activity 4: Publication as a Group of a special issue associated with FLINS2024 in a journal of international impact.
Derived from activity 3, the aim is to publish a special issue of a journal of international impact (e.g., the TOP journal published by the SEIO), in which the previous activity will be disseminated. Efforts will be made to ensure that all the articles included are published in Open Access to give visibility to both activities, perhaps by global agreement with the publisher Springer of the special issue, or by article.
- Activity 5: Awards for the best Thesis in MCDM defended in Spanish universities.
This activity is already being carried out, and is intended to be maintained as it encourages the participation of recent PhD graduates in the activities of the Network and its visibility, within the context of the annual meetings of the SGW-MCDM, which also allows the younger generations to meet and get to know the other senior members of the Network, and to create contacts and future ties. In September 2022 the last award was presented, the next one would be at the meeting scheduled for spring 2024 in Oviedo.
- Activity 6: Organization of a EURO PhD School
With the aim of training and disseminating multi-criteria decision methodologies, a training activity for PhD students, mainly European, will be organized within the framework of EURO. EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) has this subsidy mechanism for the co-organization of these intensive doctoral courses lasting between 1 and 3 weeks. The organization of a EURO PhD School will be requested, tentatively in Malaga.
- Activity 7: Social dissemination of the applications of Multicriteria Decision Making, and academic dissemination in the Ibero-American area.
The activity aims to develop materials for the social dissemination of MCDM, in particular its applications. These applications fit into multiple productive fields, as is the case of Operations Research itself. The idea is to create informative materials (perhaps in more modern formats incorporating videos, for example) and to contact the SEIO in order to fit them into a possible broader action for Statistics and Operations Research. On the other hand, a lack of training materials in Spanish has been detected, which are in great demand from Latin America, so it is proposed to create a publication (in the form of a book or series of small books, with ISBN) to fill this gap, also as an activity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the creation of the SGW-MCDM.
